Spanish Muslim mathematician whose Marasim al-intisab fi'ilm al-hisab is the earliest extant arithmetical treatise by a Muslim in Spain. One interesting characteristic of the text is the fact that al-Umawi apparently wrote it for use by mathematicians in the eastern Islamic world—al-Umawi later migrated to Damascus—at a time when the achievements of eastern Islamic mathematicians generally surpassed those of their counterparts in Spain and Morocco. Marasim examines topics such as addition, multiplication, arithmetic series, and geometric series.
