Mary is the American literary agent who approaches Bowen about writing the story of his and Bob's life together. After reading Gruner's piece, Mary takes an interest in Bowen. Although Bowen has never thought about writing a book before and doubts the significance of his story, Mary continues to encourage him. She later connects him with Garry and arranges a meeting for him at Hodder and Stoughton.
