Religion Freedom in the English Colonies
Summary: The quest for religious freedom was a driving force in colonial America. This started with the Puritans who came to America to break free of the Anglican church. The European Enlightenment influence religion in the colonies.
Religion was a major factor during the founding of the American colonies. Many colonies were founded in order to give the English religious freedom. The Puritans are a group of separatists who wanted to establish a colony based on the bible. They were trying to purify the Anglican church, and came to America in order to build a place in which they could live and worship freely.
Religious freedom was something the colonists were very concerned about. Seven of the original thirteen colonies were founded with that in mind. Were the leaders of these colonies truly concerned about religion, though? Many of the leaders probably used this just as an incentive, or as propaganda to convince colonists to come over to America.
