Summary: "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," "The Damned Thing," and "The Yellow Sign" are all examples of genre fiction. Many works not only carry the one genre, but may encounter several at a time. As previously mentioned fantasy, science fiction, and horror often coincide with one another. In result of the coinciding genres fans often say that it is their favorite genre group and take pleasure in it.

According to Wikipedia (2006), works that are fiction and often come in the form of a novel or short story with the purpose of placing into a certain literary genre to appeal to a certain group or fans is referred to genre fiction. It was known from the very beginning of literature that there are different groups or categories of literary works. Narrative, dramatic, and lyric forms were the divisions of poetry in ancient times (Forbes, 1998). Narrative poetry was often an epic and was not sung or recited, dramatic poetry had two divisions which led to tragedy and comedy, and Aristotle started categorizing genres based solely on the ending and the design of the literary work (Forbes, 1998).
