Development of the Baroque Style

Summary: The Baroque style of art was the result of a counter-reformation, in reaction to the Protestant Reformation. It represented a response on the part of the Roman Catholic Church to the many cultural movements that made new forms of religion. The works of Catholic artists Peter Paul Rubens and Michelangelo Caravaggio and of Protestant artists Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer show how counter-reformation art was religiously themed while art of the Reformation was based more on daily life and events.
The Baroque period was a very important time in the history of art. It was the period after the High Renaissance. The Baroque period was the result of the dramatic change in the High Renaissance. The Baroque was the result of a counter reformation from the protestant movement.

The main cultural/religious events that caused the change from the Renaissance style art to the Baroque are: the Reformation and counter-Reformation.

The Reformation was a movement in which protestant reformers rejected the use of religious icons in churches and so there was a wave of iconoclasm in which stained glass windows were smashed, statues broken, paintings of saints destroyed and organs removed from the churches.

The Catholic Church responded to this with a form of art that opposed the severity of the protestant reformers. This form of art and architecture was called Baroque.
