1: The main character is this book is Dicey Tillerman, a thirteen year old girl who has two brothers and one sister. Dicey has brown hair, hazel eyes, and is very skinny. She grew up along the beach in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Her dad had left her mom to raise Dicey and her siblings right after Dicey's brother, Sammy was born. The Tillermans' were poor from the beginning and with only momma left to support the family they were in trouble.
