Societal Pressures for Feminity in "Boys and Girls" and "Initiation"

Summary: In "Boys and Girls," by Alice Munro, and "Initiation," by Slyvia Plath, the protagonist characters are under pressure from society to adhere to stereotypes of feminity. The characters, Millicent and Margaret, undergo self-discovery to rebel against this oppression and learn who they really are.
Traditionally, girls are made to think that they must act a certain way. Their family specifically parents would push them to do certain things a man would not, such as cooking and cleaning. In a more modern day society girls are expected to be pretty, popular and only talk to certain people. These expectations weigh in on a woman and further the stereotype to act like a sorority princess or a housewife. In the stories "Boys and Girls," by Alice Munro, and "Initiation," by Slyvia Plath, the protagonists are put under pressure to fit society's view of a perfect woman. Millicent from "Initiation," believes initially that she wants to be a part of her high school's sorority because she believes that she would have a better life being a part of the sorority. Whereas, in comparison, Margaret from "Boys and Girls," believes the stereotypical life of a housewife...
