Summary: The essay refers to risk factors and protective factors in communities and in the home and the degree to which these factors can influence youth to partake in violence.
The starting point of violence takes place in communities and at home--not at school. Youth take what they hear and see at home and in their communities to school. The environment in some communities and households are positive and the presences of protective factors outweigh the high risk factors. However, there are communities and households where there is a lack of informal social control and high risk factors exist more than protective factors--, which affect youth in a negative manner.

A sudden increase of youth violence in public schools in early 1990 has caused many to raise concerns about violent behaviors in schools. In the past, the most common form of violence that took place in schools was bullying, physical fights, or arguments. Now when violence in schools occur it involves fighting, sexual assault, rape, larceny, vandalism, bombs, and weapons--commonly guns.
