War has been an active component of mankind's existence. Modern warfare today is constantly advancing as nations dedicate their resources to research and testing, always looking for a way to come out ahead of the competition. The most controversial issue in the advancement of modern warfare today is the usage of depleted uranium. DU is a byproduct of enriched uranium (Farley, 2003) and is considered depleted because of the absence of the uranium isotope U-235. The remaining portion, U-238, is 40% less radioactive and a byproduct of U-235's use as fuel for nuclear reactors or as a component of bomb production (Parsons, 2001). Depleted Uranium has several uses. Because of its availability and low cost, it is often used as a commercial aircraft counterweight (Zajik, 1999) at 1.7 times the density of lead (The Military Uses, Online).
