Canadian Arctic Sovereignty: From Sea to Sea

Summary: Canada must increase its military presence in the Arctic so that it can adequately defend its land, water, and airspace and ensure its hold on rights to a Northwest Passage opened by global warming. Not having an adequate and demonstrable military will diminish Canada's ability to preserve its sovereignty as well as to help its friends in times of conflict.
As it stands today the Canadian Arctic is a barren and frozen wasteland. Considering approximately ninety percent of Canada's population lives within one hundred and sixty kilometers of the United States border there are very few people living in the northern most reaches of Canada. (CIA - The World Factbook - Canada). However, if scientists are right about global warming that will change. Within decades the permafrost will begin to thaw and the Canadian Arctic will be open to development and industry. Natural resources that have been unreachable for years will be accessible. When that time comes Canada needs to ensure that its claims to land, water, and airspace are recognized. At present Canada does not regularly patrol its Arctic territories.
