Summary: "Anthem" by Ayn Rand is a philosophical novel about the evils of a totalitarian collectivist society, and how egoism prevail over such societies. The personality of the character Equality 7-2521 is revealed in three quotations from the novel.
The story "Anthem" written by Ayn Rand is a philosophical novel about the evils of a totalitarian collectivist society, and how egoism will always prevail over it. The citizens are slaves to the society and can not act on or even think any independent thoughts. The words "I," "me," "you," "myself," and other names for one's own self have been banned with a death penalty for speaking or writing them. Instead, they have to say words like "we" in place of "I," and "they" in place of "you." The plot of the story is about a boy growing from youth to adulthood, and also growing from a single non-unique equal piece of society to an independent unique individual. In a society that punishes any from of self-love, self-distinctiveness, self-confidence, self-concern, and most importantly self-identity.
