Major Thomas: The Real Hero of "Breaker Morant"

Summary: The movie "Breaker Morant," directed by Bruce Beresford, is a story about England's involvement in the Boer War. While several obvious heroes are portrayed, it can be argued that the real hero is Major Thomas, the defense lawyer who maintains his honesty and integrity in the face of a losing battle.
The film Breaker Morant, directed by Bruce Beresford, presents several heroes such as Harry Morant, Peter Handcock and George Witton. However, it could be argued that the real hero in the film is Major Thomas, the defence lawyer for the three men being tried for murder during the Boer War. As a viewer, we are shown Thomas change from a clumsy and inexperienced small town solicitor to a sharp lawyer who put "up and unexpectedly good defence." He maintains his honesty and integrity throughout the entire trial and is able to show sympathy to Morant, Handcock and Witton which shows a softer side to his character. Thomas is shown as the less obvious hero who does not give up fighting the real enemy in the film, the British Military high command.
