American Foreign Policy: Unilateralism

Summary: The United States' continued pursuit of a unilateralist foreign policy presents a lingering danger to its safety and security. It alienates the United States from the rest of the world, resulting in international denigration and social, political, and cultural gaps between the country and other nations. As victories in the American Revolution and both World Wars depended on cooperation between the U.S. and other nations, so the future of the U.S. depends on its ability to work effectively with other countries to form a safer, more peaceful world.
As America delves into this new millennium, a lingering danger jeopardizes the safety and security of this nation. Unilateralism is characterized by the carrying out of foreign affairs with minimal consultation and association with other nations. Over the last century the United States has continued to stray away from its multilateralist roots to adopt a much more unilateralist approach to foreign policy resulting in resentment from many nations around the world, many of which are past allies. Former Attorney General under President Lyndon Johnson, Ramsey Clark stated, "The greatest crime since World War II has been U.S. foreign policy." I believe this simple quote to be a fair assessment of the United States current foreign policy. The US has implemented a belligerent foreign agenda despite clear disapproval of multi-national organizations like the United Nations and a majority of associated nations.
