Summary: The mysteries surrounding the disappearance of boats and planes in the Bermuda Triangle are popularly explained by engine failure caused by methane beds beneath the see floor, unpredictable weather patterns, and unexplained magnetic disturbances that effect compasses and other navigational devices.
In 1973 about eight thousand distress calls in this particular area were responded to by the United States Coast Guard (Bermuda (or Devil's) 1). The area bordered by Florida to Bermuda Islands to Puerto Rico and back to Florida is known as the Bermuda Triangle (Bermuda 1). In the past twenty-two years the triangle has mysteriously engulfed about eighty private and charter airplanes (Quasar 1). However, the amount of disappearances in the area is not extraordinary because of the size, location and the amount of traffic this area receives. It is located off the southeastern coast of the United States in the Atlantic Ocean (Bermuda 1) and it is about 500,000 square miles (Quasar 1). Many have believed that the area is cursed due to the large amounts of disappearances; yet, these mysterious disappearances are not mysterious at all.
