Summary: Human personality is not the singular, structured entity many believe it to be; it can have multiple layers, with different aspects revealed in different environments. Sigmund Freud explored this fragmentation of personality and theorized about the id, the ego, and the superego as three distinct agencies within the human psyche that conflicted with each other. Freud's analysis is easily applied to the character Sabina in Ana¿s Nin's novel A Spy in the House of Love; Sabina struggles with constant internal conflict regarding her numerous affairs and the feeling that she must suppress all of her different emotions and actions into a single personality.
