Rene Descartes: A Philsophy of the Physical World

Summary: Rene Descartes philosphy about the interaction of the mind and the body helped form the Scientific Revolution of the 17th century. The author's opinions of this philosophy are included.
From learning about the Scientific Revolution, which began in the early 1600's, I have gained knowledge about the introduction of new ideas, technologies and concepts in the civilized world, which emerged during this time period. With mention of the Scientific Revolution, one person that significantly stands out in my mind due to his large contributions in transforming historical ways of thinking was Rene Descartes. As Morton (1997) describes, Descartes' ideas, as a philosopher not only develops an opinion of the new sciences coming forth in the Scientific Revolution, he develops "a theory of knowledge, a theory of mind, and a theology, as well as a foundation for the physical sciences" (pg. 63).

Perhaps, the most interesting and controversial element in Descartes' philosophy was his belief involving mind and body dualism. This line of thinking developed from Descartes' Cartesian concept of the mind. Descartes' ideas were easily matched by other philosopher's...
