Dominance of Women in "The Gold Cadillac" and "The Schoolteacher's Guest"
Summary: In the short stories "The Schoolteacher's Guest" and "The Gold Cadillac", women are more dominant than men. Do you agree? Overall, both "The Gold Cadillac" and "The Schoolteacher's Guest" shows that women can definitely be more dominant than men especially Ines in "The Schoolteacher's Guest" as she holds great amounts of authority over the community.
In these short stories, the dominance of women does appear to be signified. In "The Schoolteacher's Guest" Ines shows her dominating personality over the entire society and in "The Gold Cadillac", the mother shows dominance both over her children, father and even the extended families and friends.
One of the ways in which the mother proves to be more dominant than the father, in "The Gold Cadillac", is her dominance as a parent. The father is more easy going. The father says that she:
"Told me I bought this Cadillac alone, I could just ride in it alone"
And to her daughter she says:
"I think you ought to go to sleep"
The mother is obviously the more strict of the two parents - the verb "ought" shows that she is demanding the child to go to sleep, the father seems to play no role in disciplining the...
