Harry Truman was awakened by a knock on his door at 3 o'clock one morning. When he opened the door, no one was there. He concluded that the knock was that of Lincoln's.

Lincoln is believed to appear when the nation's security is at risk. He paces back and forth along the second floor hallway, knocks on doors, and stands by certain windows with his hands folded behind his back. Once, a member of the staff claimed to see Lincoln sitting on his bed, pulling up his boots.

The ghost of Abigail Adams was seen floating through the closed doors of the East Room to hang laundry during William Taft's presidency.

As a gardener was removing rose bushes from the garden, he was reproved by the ghost of Dolly Madison who had planted the roses over a hundred years before.

Andrew Jackson's ghost could be heard laughing in the Rose Room during the 1930's.

Since 1952, when extensive repairs were done to the second floor of the White House, ghosts have not walked so actively.
