Summary: This essay describes the political costs and gains of Canada's participation in World War I, and the effect of their participation on Canada's domestic economy and national identity. It also describes Canada's relationship to the international community after their participation in World War I.
Mud, dirt, hunger, strife, casualty after casualty, the death toll is mounting. A Canadian soldier situates himself on top of fallen comrades trying desperately to avoid the artillery shells flying across his ground. He survives the battle and in due course the war. We call him a hero, a patriot, a true partisan of our country. The war was World War I, the victor happened to be our side. The thousands upon thousands of men who returned witnessed a new nation in motion, nothing of what they left it as. There were many bitter costs to the war. Distracted mind-set dealing with domestic crises, exhausted idealism, deepening of the French English feud, and most importantly the loss of close to 60,000 men. Moreover, it was not a war without gain; Canada enjoyed such comfortable benefits as a seat in the League of Nations, a sense of a well-built army...
