Summary: One of the greatest artists in history, Vincent Van Gogh lived an awkward life; he moved from place to place, he had trouble throughout his life forming relationships with other people, and he is said to have been mentally ill. Despite his hard life, he was a prolific artist who put a great deal of emotion into his paintings. His short, ten-year career produced 800 paintings, 400 of them during the last two years of his life. Although no one enjoyed his artwork during his time, his paintings today sell for millions of dollars.
Even though Vincent Van Gogh was mentally ill, he was still one of the greatest artists in history. "Vincent Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, exactly one year after his mother gave birth to a stillborn child, when Vincent was born, he was given his dead brother's name (Harrison, 6)." Vincent was extremely different from other people. He was quiet, and he often wandered around. Even his own parents couldn't understand him, they were concerned. Vincent wasn't surrounded by art until his teenage years. He was occasionally in the hospital because he was considered to be mentally ill. Once, he became so angry, he cut off his own left ear lobe and sent it in a handkerchief to a woman named Rachel. One of his greatest paintings was "The Bedroom At Arles," painted in 1888.
