Summary: Raspberries are grown best in areas that have cool summers, mild winters, and rain free harvesting seasons. About 90% of raspberries are grown in Oregon, Washington, and California. Another 10% is transported from Chile. Raspberries are in supermarkets mostly from November through March. They also grow in the northern parts of Europe.
Raspberries are fascinating fruits. Did you know that there are numerous different types of raspberries known to man? There is the black raspberry; white bark raspberry; the San Diego raspberry; the dwarf raspberry; the roadside raspberry; and the American red raspberry. There are many more than those six varieties. By the late 1800's, only forty different kinds were known. Raspberries come in different colors: red, black, yellow, purple, and white. The most commonly eaten are the red and black raspberries. The raspberry has been around since early Roman times - over 2000 years. The Romans were introduced to the raspberry from the Greeks. The raspberry takes the name from the English word rasp, which means to make a harsh and grating sound.
