In 1903 the campaign for women's suffrage had existed for over 30 years already. Led by Millicent Fawcett, the NUWSS had formed in 1897. Over 50.000 people joined the society, including considerable numbers of men. The NUWSS campaigned for better rights for women at work (arguing for better pay and conditions), in the home (attempting to change the sexual and marital injustices against women) and the fight for women's enfranchisement. However come 1903 some women lost patience with the movement. Irritated with its dilatory progress, these women joined the WSPU and became known as Suffragettes. In this essay I will explore the differences and similarities of the tactics of the Suffragists and the Suffragettes.
