Many societies would be based on the philosophy of an ideal, a supreme way of doing things. In Ancient Rome this ideal was structure, regardless of which aspect of society. Religion in Ancient Rome was distinctly divided into two aspects; public worship (i.e. religion of the state) which was headed by a nominated head priest (pontifex maximus) and private worship, which was generally any sort of religious observance in the household (the worship of household gods etc.). The state religion itself was strictly structured, with several priestly colleges attending to their assigned position of the state religion. In terms of social structure, Rome was firmly divided between rich and poor, patrician and plebeian, and citizen and non-citizen.
