The poem I am written about is Travelling through the Dark by William Stafford who is an American poet therefore he has set this poem in an American setting, it is a first person narrative which deals which real life situations such as life and death the poet is faced with a moral dilemma that has to be made and he is faced with the choice of what to do.

Although this is a short poem there is much emphasis laid on the setting: the road, river, canyon, mountain and wilderness. This establishes the contrast with the safe reassuring world in which he lives his everyday life: The city, lights, and streets...

In the world of nature the man is an outsider to the wilderness, which is not a scenic backdrop but an audience - "around our group I could hear the wilderness listen."
