In James Baldwin's words, it is the "key to identity." In one word, a person can confess much about their background, personal life, origins, education, and occupation to a conversational partner.

It can be argued that language does not make up one's character. President George W. Bush is a very good example of this phenomenon. For example, he was born to a very wealthy family, and had a very high-class education, but when he speaks, his speech patterns do not reflect that.
