A Career Choice

Summary: Discusses the career choice of substance abuse counselor. Describes potential earnings and the desire to help people.
My choice of career has been reflected on my life as I have grown up. Growing up in a family with both parents addicted to drugs and alcohol is one of the hardest things to deal with, therefore I would like to help people and their families deal with these problems. The job of my choice is a Substance Abuse and Behavior Disorder counselor.

A master's degree is typically required to be licensed or certified as a counselor. In an accredited master's degree program, 48 to 60 semester hours of graduate study including a period of supervised clinical experience are required.

Annual earnings in 2002 were $30,180. The middle 50% earned between $24,350 and $37,520. The lowest 10% earned less than $19,540, and the highest 10% earned more then $45,570.

Some of the skills required to be a Substance Abuse and Behavior Disorder counselor include speaking, critical thinking, coordination, and active listening. People who are interested in being a counselor should have a strong interest in helping others and should possess the ability to inspire, respect, and trust.

I'm not exactly sure where I will want to live and pursue my career, but am sure that I will be able to help people no matter where I go.
