Summary: In the short story, "The Sniper" by Liam O'Flaherty, a Republican sniper is faced with a one on one shoot out with an enemy sniper. After being hit by his opponent, the Republican sniper pretends to be dead and then delivers one fatal shot to the enemy, killing him. "The sniper looked at his enemy falling and he shuddered. The lust of battle died in him."

In the dictionary, the word conflict can be defined as, a serious disagreement or argument, a prolonged armed struggle, or an incompatibility between opinions. However the meaning of conflict is interpreted, every person goes through both minor and major conflicts during his lifetime. Conflicts can occur in many different circumstances between different subjects, but there is one thing that all struggles certainly have in common. It does not matter the topic or origin, there is always some humanity to be gained from the struggles that people are faced with and must overcome. This is because conflict forces people to see past their own emotions, and because conflict gives people a sense of empathy for the opposing side. When people overcome the challenges of conflict, they gain an understanding of compassion.
