In Suzanne Pharr's A Match Made in Heaven, the author illustrates the concept of irony. Pharr uses irony and tone to shock the readers. She does this by showing them that two people who share contrasting beliefs can converse and in the end benefit from it. Upon boarding the plane to Portland, Oregon, both Pharr and the Promise Keepers(The Promise Keepers are a group of white men organizing around issues of women and people of color) have stereotypes of each other.(237) During the flight, Pharr stops "trying to escape through reading" (238) and begins chatting with one of the Promise Keepers.
