8 1/2 (1963) by Federico Fellini about a man named Guido, an Italian director who has lost inspiration for his upcoming movie. He is continuingly feeling pressure from his friends, wife, mistress and producer. His only way to escape is through his dreams and he finds inspiration there. The film is surrealism and the flashbacks represent his need for his past to help him achieve his future.

The Mise-en-scene, defined as the articulation of cinematic space, in this film is very interesting. Fellini took advantage of the frame, and specifically placed characters in the most appropriate spots. He has a very theatrical way of placing people in the frame, very similar to stage. In one scene, where Guido is talking to his father, he is standing in the foreground, where his father is much smaller in the background in the right bottom corner.
