Sir John A.Macdonald

Summary: John was a major Father in Confederation, and was responsible for Manitoba and British Columbia becoming a part of Canada. He learned in Midland District Grammar School and in John Cruickshank School in Kingston, Ontario.
Macdonald, John A. -born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 11, 1815. Later in 1820, he immigrated to the province of Canada. He was the first Prime Minister of Canada, and was part of the Liberal-Conservative party. He was Prime Minister from 1867-1873, and from 1878- 1891. He passed away well still in office, on June 6, 1891.

John and his first wife Isabella Clarke were married in 1843. Together they had two boys, but the first one died. In 1857 Isabella Clarke died. Later, in 1867, John got re-married to Susan Agnes Bernard. Together they had one girl, who suffered from hydrocephaly, which left her both mentally and physically handicapped.

In 1867 John became the first Prime Minister of Canada. In 1873, John's term was interrupted by a problem called the Pacific Scandal, this caused John to resign and lose the election. In 1878 John was re-elected. John stayed in office until 1891, because he died.

John had many accomplishments throughout his career. He was knighted by the queen. He helped create the Liberal-Conservative in Canada-west. He had a joint Premiership with Etienne-Paschal Tache and with George-Etienne Cartier. He also joined forces with George Etienne Cartier and George Brown to be a Co-leader of the Great Coalition. John was also a big part of building the Canadian Pacific Railway. John created Canada's first national park in 1885. He also created the North West Mounted Police. John won 4 consecutive elections.

He learned in Midland District Grammar School and in John Cruickshank School in Kingston, Ontario. John will be sadly missed by everyone. He's buried in Catariqui Cemetery near Kingston. He was one of our first and best Prime Ministers, and will be missed by everybody.
