The Five Themes of Geography as Applied in "Medicine Man"

Summary: An overview of how the five themes of geography -- location, place, region, human-environment interaction, and movement -- apply to the movie "Medicine Man." The movie is about about a scientist who was transferred to a tribal area in the Amazon rainforest and joins another scientist who may have found the cure for cancer.
In the movie, Medicine Man, the five themes of geography are used in many ways. I will elucidate these according to the movie, which will include location, place, region, human-environment interaction, and movement.

The first geographical theme is location; there are two types of location; absolute and relative location. The absolute location is the Amazon Rainforest located in Brazil. The relative location is almost a jungle type area with a lot of trees and a lot of rain.

The second theme that is used in this movie is place. Place is almost like the relative location, except it's a bit more specific and touches bases on "what its like." The Amazon Rainforest is made up of leaves, trees, and has a lot of rain. There is constant rainfall and leaves the rainforest looking very `green'.

The third theme is region, and the region for the movie Medicine Man is Perceptual. It is perceptual because people distinguish Brazil to be a native land with native people, and that has been proven through the movie.

The fourth theme is human-environment interaction and it's used throughout the movie with the [lady] scientist and when she first goes to the rainforest. She is kind of upset because of the way people make their drinks--because they spit in it. Mostly with all the food she gets offered, she declines it or says "pass" because she doesn't want to eat it. Another example of human-environment interaction is when the two scientists climb the mountains, the [lady] scientist is afraid of heights and has to soon adapt to that because in order to do certain things, you have to climb high heights.

The last theme is movement and it's illustrated in the movie pretty obvious. The native tribes get items around by boats, across water (very small boats), and sometimes even carry the items around. They get ideas around by making sounds or talking to one another, for example; the native tribe kicked the bottom of the tree stomp and it made noises that traveled to people and they went from there.

To conclude everything that I've said and done, the five themes of geography have been used in many ways, including the two scientists and the cultural relations in the movie with native tribes.
