Summary: Forgiveness in normal terms refers to the action of releasing of a grudge against a person for any slight or offence done to oneself by another in the past. Contrition means the penitence felt by oneself for doing an act that could be see as offensive to another. The statement "There can be no forgiveness without contrition" refers to the act of being unable to forgive over a slight, a person without himself or herself actually feeling sorry for doing the action in the first place.
