Summary: Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

As a child, Joe became a gentle and loving man despite growing up with an abusive father. This is not typical of most children raised in an abusive situation.


Adults abused as children

Although Joe has suffered much abuse as a child, Joe is a kind hearted man who is warm and loving. I begin to think, "How could that be"" My theory for Joe behaving in such a compassionate and benevolent manner is because he has a fear for destruction, aggression, and violence. He feels that he should not display anymore brutal behavior onto others. I believe he feels that it's not necessary because he has seen what terrible outcomes come from vicious actions. He wants to develop and learn new skills that will not result into abuse; he wants to overcome his history and become a good father figure for Pip. I only wish this was the case with most children that grow up in abusive homes.
