The theme is reinforced in the title "Two Kinds." From the title the reader must ask the question two kinds of what? The central theme in the story "Two Kinds" depicts the struggles between a mother and daughter as they tackle life experiences together but through very different point of views.

One of the ways the author supports this theme is by describing the mothers thoughts on living in America. " My mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America." (527) The author goes on to explain that the mother may feel this way because of her past in China and how she lost her husband, 2 daughters and home. So by coming to America she starts new life, new family new hopes and dreams.
