*Yalta Conference (4-11 Feb.)
A meeting between the Allied leaders Stalin, Churchill, and the ailing Roosevelt in the Crimea concerning the future conduct of the war and the shape of the post-war > international order. It was agreed that the Polish and Soviet borders would move westwards to the Oder-Neisse and Curzon lines at the territorial expense of Germany, Germany itself was to be divided into four zones of occupation and an Inter-Allied Control Council was established for Berlin. In add., there was an agreement that the liberated states of Eastern Europe should hold free democratic elections. The Conference also made important decisions regarding the proposed UN org., in particular that the great powers would be given the power of veto in the Security Council, and that the Soviet Union would receive three memberships (the Soviet Union, Byelorussia and Ukraine) => gave Stalin a position of dominance...
