Australia and the Vietnam War

Summary: Discussion on the Vietnam War and how it impacted Australia and its people. Focuses on the mental and physical consequences faced by veterans upon their return.
Australia joined up forces with America and other countries to fight against communism in Vietnam. This however, changed the lives of Australians who fought in the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War impacted the everyday lives of Australian soldiers mentally and physically such as diseases produced from the chemical usage in the war, intrusions, isolation and working difficulties.

When the war was over and the soldiers returned, many veterans came back with lost limbs, multiple amputations and were severely disabled. This was 300% more damage than in the previous war, World War 1.

The chemical mixture most commonly produced for the use in the Vietnam War was a defoliation agent known as "agent orange." Its purpose in the war was to destroy vegetation so the enemies hiding grounds could be seen and it prevented guerilla attacks from occurring.
