In "The Scarlet Ibis" James Hurst paints a beautiful picture of how two things can be symbolic to one another. "The Scarlet Ibis" is a short story about a crippled boy named Doodle and his big brother.

In the story a tropical bird was blown in by a storm. It finds itself in the bleeding tree where Doodle and his family live. It dies, and Doodle seems to take more sympathy on the bird than anyone else. Sadly, Doodle also dies at the end of the story too. His and the birds deaths are very similar in many ways. The bird died because of a storm and Doodle dies when a storm comes. When Doodles brother finds him, he had bled from the mouth, and his shirt was stained with his red blood, like it says in this quote, "He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his...
