Individualism in "The Anthem"
Summary: Essay discusses the theme of individualism in "The Anthem" by Ayn Rand.
In Anthem, Ayn Rand uses the main character, Equality 7-2521, to introduce her major issue - individualism. She gets her point across very effectively by portraying to the reader how appalling a strictly collective society with absolute equality could be. Equality 7-2521 is a member of a future community that has done away with civilization as we know it. It is a dystopian society established by egalitarians that have oppressed the population. They have done away with egoism and enforce selflessness. To accommodate these concepts, the highest form of technology allowed is a candle and the citizens are assigned jobs opposite his or her strength. Also, everyone refers to themselves as "we" instead of "I" to further instill a communal mentality.
