The main point of the gospel accounts in relation to the last twelve hours of Jesus' life was to give a reason as to why Jesus died. The gospels describe how Jesus was to be killed for mankind. That is Jesus had taken it upon himself to be the savior of all human beings. He had managed to be able to do this by taking all of the known sins of mankind on his own proverbial shoulders and die on the cross.
