The Death of Pride

Summary: Essay describes the life application of the short story, "The Scarlet Ibis."

When a person's life changes and the changes interfere with the way he thinks life should be, pride often comes in to overtake the person. Pride, anger, and discontentment influence a person's actions toward that change. However, eventually the person will learn to cope with the change. Hopefully, the adjustments will not come too late. Pride nearly always results in the downfall of the prideful, or else it results in the downfall of those whom the prideful love.


In the short story, "The Scarlet Ibis," the narrator holds the idea that with the coming of a younger brother will also come a playmate and companion. Unfortunately, his younger brother is born with a disability, and cannot walk. Life's unexpected twists force all people to be flexible and to adapt to what is going on around them.


Because the narrator is embarrassed that his brother is five years old...
