Comparing Three Poems

Summary: Compares and contrasts how a cynical view of life is expressed in the following three poems, "The Latest Decalogue" "A Song" and, "Thou Art Indeed Just, Lord."
These three poets describe the life style that is presented during the times of their existence. The poems describe that people need to do wrong in order to go places in life.

Arthur Hugh Clough's poem makes a mockery of the Ten Commandments only to show us that the world of his time was one of selfishness, materialism and a complete lack of spirituality. The irony is that, even though this poem was written over a century ago, we can still apply this poem to the twentieth century. What's more is that Arthur Hugh Clough used the word "Latest," in the title of his poem. This religious imagery emphasise the effect that this poem has on the reader.
