Summary: This essay deals with the changes in Harry caused by the minor characters throughout "The Kingdom by the Sea" by Robert Westall.
The book "The Kingdom by the Sea" is a story based upon one boy's journey in search of happiness during the Second World War after his family's home is bombed. The main character, Harry changes a lot through out his journey and this is greatly due to the different people he meets and what he learns or endures with them.

Three of the main incidents in Harry' journey are; his encounter with Joseph, an orphaned man who learns to live by the sea. His time with Corporal Arthur Blenkinsop (Artie) and meeting with Corporal Merman, and lastly his stay with Mr. Murgatroyd.

One the most interesting experiences was Harry's encounter with Joseph. He meets Joseph on a beach and finds out that Joseph is also an orphan. Harry then spends time learning how to cope and live by the sea. Joseph mainly teaches him, he taught Harry how...
