In The Stone Carvers, a novel by Jane Urquhart, a young man named Eamon O'Sullivan goes off to fight in World War One. He is the only man from the little town of Shoneval to fight in WWI, and he never returns. Before his depart, he and his lover Klara Becker, the heroine of the story, have an argument. Klara does not want Eamon to leave her to go fight for the ungrateful British, yet Eamon is convinced that if he goes then he will be able to fly an aeroplane, something that he dreams of every night before leaving. When Klara hears of the news that Eamon is missing, she is devastated.
