The poem `People' by Charlotte Zolotow is a poem about cause and effect, if looked at on the surface. The tone of this poem is a rather light-hearted one. The rhyming scheme goes alternately in the form of abcb, then followed by defe. Each line of each stanza is also of equal length of five words each. The poet starts every first alternate line with some people and the sentence ends off with its effect. The fact that the author uses the phrase "some people" often is to show the contrast between both the right and wrong efforts applied more effectively. There is a wonderful effect of emphasis and reiteration by the author as she uses repetition of verbs very well. In lines 1 and 2 of the first stanza, "Some people talk and talk and never say a thing", the phrase "talk and talk" gives an excellent emphasis. A...
