Portuguese Revolution

Summary: This essay is an answer to three questions whcih prevail in the mind of many of those who have studied the Portuguese Revolution. It deals with the failures of dictatorship of Salazar and Marcelo Caetano and the African Colonial wars.
1. Assess how far (a) The episode of the Three Marias and (b) the ideas of General Spinola contributed to the Portuguese Revolution.

In 1968, Marcelo Caetano took power as Salazar was very ill and wasn't able to rule the country, he later died in 1970. This was a time of modernisation in the world, a social revolution, called the "Swinging Sixties" took place. Hippies, rock `n' roll and fashion were becoming heavily popular. However, Salazar kept fighting to keep these influences out of Portugal. Coca-Cola wasn't even allowed in Portugal at that time. Therefore, there was a willingness from the Portuguese population to join this new modern world which Salazar tried to hide from them.

In the rest of the world, the role of women in society was becoming much more important and women were gaining much more freedom. Salazar disliked independent women from the start. Whilst everyone was equal...
