Frederick Douglass was born in 1818. Back then, his name was Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey. His mother was a slave. Her name was Harriet Bailey. His father was a white man but Fred had never known him. There were rumors that his master was his father. Since slaves had to do fieldwork, their children were raised by Betsey and Isaac Bailey. Since they were too old to do work, they had been put in charge of all slaves born on the plantation. Frederick was taken from his mother when he was no more than a one year old. His mother was sad but she knew that Fred would be brought up by his grandparents. That was the only comfort she had.
