Summary: Essay briefly discusses the aspect of violence in hockey.
Hockey was originated in Canada between the 1850s and 1860s. Back then hockey players rarely wore any equipment. It was a very violent sport back then and is still violent now. In the first games of hockey they only had shin guards and knee pads, which were not strong enough to protect against the puck and stick. So, some of the early hockey players would stuff the pads they did have with magazine pages and newspapers. Since they did not have good enough equipment for protection a lot of players would get hurt. The goalies didn't even have face masks. They didn't get face masks until a hockey player got hit in the face with a puck and broke his cheekbone. The players also used to not wear helmets. Players that suffered from head injuries would wear them only most of the time, and then it became necessary...
