Infertility is not a late-twentieth-century phenomenon. Infertility has always existed. However, in the past the infertile were more dependant of fate and they also had the luxury to adopt children informally within their own extended families or communities. A society obsessed with acquiring material commodities has elevated the pain of the infertile. Now days, "having" a child are neither a blessing nor a burden sent by God. A child has become a "lifestyle" commodity to be acquired; a symbol of fertility, normalcy and probably the only lifelong relationship we can count on after divorce of family disruption.
