English as an Official Language

English, as an official language is very controversial. Many people speak English and few don't. But those few would have to learn a whole new language that may take some time. Those who do speak English feel that if everybody speaks English that our country might be more united. The two sides of this argument are the "pros" and the "cons."
First are the positive points. Making English the official language would unite Americans. When everyone speaks English it feels safer because you know what people are saying and builds more of a sense of security. Such a bill would only apply to the Federal Government because it only applies to federal funded programs and schools not privately funded schools. Immigrants would be more encouraged to become involved in the U.S. democratic process because they would know what was going on and might give them an interest...
