In the United States of America, an "egalitarian society", there still exists many instances in which we discriminate against and subdivide its citizens. Sex is a primary example of how people are divided in a society, a division that is used worldwide. Sex separates humans into subdivisions of men and women, male and female. To place a person into either a male or female status, one must only know which set of sexual organs that person possess. Primary sex characteristics, the sexual organs of a human being, are biologically determined when the sperm fertilizes the egg. These characteristics are what determines sex. As opposed to biological determination, the gender of a person is determined sociologically. Gender is learned, and refers to masculinity and femininity as opposed to sex.
